Science
The science faculty is found on D floor at Southfield school. It is here that students use the part of their brain that enjoys asking ‘Why?’ ‘What if?’ and ‘How?’
To help students develop the answer to these questions we have seven laboratories, one psychology room, ten teachers of science and three technicians who look after all the equipment they will be using. The labs are different from the rooms most students will have used at their primary schools, in that they are only used for science lessons and are equipped with lots of exciting bits and pieces that we use to explore scientific ideas and concepts.
Students will be doing lots of experiments straight away once they have demonstrated that they can work safely. We use a variety of teaching materials and textbooks including the Spectrum and Collins schemes of learning. Students will learn how science works and be able to relate it to everyday life.
Each student is fortunate to spend about one fifth of her time at Southfield studying science in every year from seven to eleven. Really keen scientists can choose to study biology, chemistry and physics separately in Years 10 and 11. For the students who excel at coursework we offer the Additional Applied Science GCSE in Year 11.
All three sciences at A Level are well subscribed and we also run a thriving course in psychology. A number of our students go on to study sciences and engineering based courses in higher education, securing places at many of the top universities.
